This artifact is a rubric that was aligned with the common core standards requirements for informative writing. This rubric met the following standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2.a Introduce a topic and group related information together; include illustrations when useful to aiding comprehension. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2.b Develop the topic with facts, definitions, and details. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2.c Use linking words and phrases (e.g., also, another, and, more, but) to connect ideas within categories of information. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.2.d Provide a concluding statement or section.
These standards require students to include in their writing a topic that is supported by facts, definitions, and details, as well as linking words and phrases and a conclusion. Because my rubric used these requirements, I aligned assessment with the learning objectives. Each student was given a copy of this rubric, giving them a clear sense of what the assignment required of them. Furthermore, because the requirements of the rubric are clearly stated and straightforward, this rubric promoted an objective and fair mindset when grading. Therefore, this artifact meets the descriptor 6 (b).
