Artifact # 1: Writing lesson plan "3(b) The teacher develops learning experiences that engage learners in collaborative and self-directed learning and that extend learner interaction with ideas and people locally and globally."
This artifact shows how I have encouraged students to work together, take initiative and responsibility for their own learning, and helped students understand a diversity of global perspectives. Because this writing lesson involved group work, requiring students to share ideas and support students who struggled to understand the learning material, I fostered an environment of collaboration. Because this lesson asked students to conduct research for an informative essay, each student had a responsibility to obtain information themselves. I did not give students the information, but required them to gain information through reading. My role was merely to scaffold students who were struggling with parts of the text, and to give students encouragement. Therefore, I allowed each student to be a self-directed learner. Because students read about different countries and the cultures of these countries, students were exposed to global ideas they would not otherwise have learned about. Therefore, this lesson plan meets the standard.
