"The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues."
In Standard # 5: Application of Content, teachers are asked to combine subjects and concepts from various content areas into a single lesson. This will help students to understand that subject areas are connected, and that information from one subject area can be applied to many other subjects. This will give learning a strong sense of purpose, as students will see how the information they learn in one subject can be transferred to other subjects as well. Additionally, teachers must provide students with engaging activities that require problem solving, as this will allow students to use skills and concepts from various subjects to solve a problem. The descriptor 5 (a) states that teachers must allow students to learn through projects, using multiple viewpoints in order to understand complex issues. The descriptor 5 (g) requires teachers to give students opportunities to experience a variety of social and cultural viewpoints. This will help students to understand problems from both local and global perspectives. When I teach my unit plan, I will meet the descriptor 5 (g).
