Biographical Sketch
I want to be a teacher because I am attracted to the community and connectedness that develops in the classroom between teachers and students. When teaching I feel that I am participating in something greater than myself, and that by guiding students through the transformative process of learning I am making a huge difference in their lives. Teaching is a profession in which I can positively impact peoples’ lives while becoming a better person myself. As my students grow and learn, I will grow and learn with them, learning about myself and what I need to do to become the best teacher I can be. Therefore, I look forewords to becoming a teacher, as this brings purpose to my life.
I first discovered I was good with and enjoyed working with children when I lived in Australia for a year and taught swim lessons. However, while this job was rewarding, I soon began to crave something that allowed me to still experience the joy of working with children but that was more complex and challenging. When my yearlong work visa expired, I moved back to Hawaii and began to pursue my masters of education. This educational experience has only increased my desire to teach children, as my mind has been opened to the endless possibilities and opportunities that can be reached in the classroom. I look forwards to fostering a positive learning environment that uses inquiry and problem solving, making students enthusiastic about learning despite the fact that learning is often difficult and requires struggle. When I was a child I found many subjects in school, such as math and science, to be incredibly difficult. These struggles have helped me better understand the difficulties many students face, allowing me to be patient and encouraging with students.
As a teacher, I hope that my students will develop academic skills and understandings, and the ability to work with others that will set them up for a bright future. In order to accomplish this I will work my hardest to plan rich and engaging lessons, research and keep up to date with effective teaching methods, and learn how to work with students who have many different learning styles and needs. Because knowledge is limitless and there are so many opportunities for both the teacher and student to grow and learn, I look forewords to the many possibilities that await me as a teacher.
